Per the Ellis Island database, Reiwke (28) from Brisk (Brest?), Russia, arrived in NYC with her daughters Chaje Reuchel (9) and Dwoire (8 mths) on the Statendam, from Rotterdam, on 5/29/1907. They were released to her husband, E. Rosenfeld, at 97 Suffolk St. NY. They had $18 between them. Reiwke had brown hair and brown eyes, and Chaje had fair hair and grey eyes. Bubbe lived into her 90's, never speaking a word of English, only Yiddish. A sweet, withered old lady, she lived in an apartment below her daughter Dorothy and son-in-law George in Brooklyn, passing the days looking out the dining room window as the world went by. Her great-grandchildren fondly remember her in her later years always grabbing at their noses and pretending to eat them or throw them away. That was her main way of communicating with them, other than shaking her fist at them, laughing, and mumbling something in Yiddish. Bubbe kept kosher all of her life and used to go to temple regularly. Out of respect for her, Dorothy and George kept a kosher home, but the rules slipped after she died in 1968.
