Notes for Jacob Chaim Tursh: Per the Ellis Island database, Jankel Tchurz (42), and his children David (22), Esther (18) and Scheine (16) arrived January 11, 1904 on the Patricia from Hamburg. They were from Mozericz. Jankel was meeting his cousin Avram Rosenfeld, 113 Rivington St, New York. Jacob arrived in Brooklyn in 1903, bringing his daughters Esther and Jennie. His wife Bessie followed in 1905 with their daughter Rose. In 1907, their son Abraham and their daughter Rebecca with her two daughters, Clara and Dora, arrived. Another son, David, also came around this time. On April 26, 1907, Jacob Tursh (40) arrived into the port of NY from Bremen on the S.S. Gera. He stated his last residence and birthplace was Smolawicz. He was going to 78/80 Shoup (?) St, Brooklyn. He was travelling with Ika Dimitri (39), also from Smolawicz and also married. Per the Ellis Island database, this record states the town he was from was Swolowisz, Russia. JewishGen states Smolawicz is Smalyavichy, Belarus, 23 ENE from Minsk, while Swolowisz is Shepelevichi, Belarus, 83 ENE of Minsk. Per the 1910 US Census, Jacob Tchursch (55), his wife Bessie (55), children Abraham (27), Esther (22), Jennie (20), Rose (18) and niece Bertha Feldstin (18) were living at 296 Metropolitan Ave. Jacob and Bessie had been married 40 years. Bessie had given birth to 8 children of which 6 were still living. Jacob, Esther and Jennie immigrated in 1903, Bessie and Rose 1905, Abraham 1907, Jacob was a grocer with his own store. Abraham was a wire framer in a factory. Esther was a saleslady in the grocery store. Jennie, Rose and Bertha were seamtresses in a shirtwaist factory. Jacob was a grocer with his own store at 296 Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn. His daughter Esther helped him in the store. He probably encouraged his son-in-law Elias Rosenfeld, Rebecca's husband, to follow him in this trade since Elias was a grocer for a few years before eventually becoming a paper and twine salesman. Daughters Jennie and Rose were seamstresses making ladies' waistcoats. A niece, Bertha Feldstein (18), also a seamstress, lived with them for a while, according to the 1910 NY census. Bertha arrived in 1905. She died about 1912. Jennie's daughter Bertha (Blanche) was named for her. Bertha may have been niece of Etka Feldstein Barakin. Jacob was living at 196 South Second Street, Bklyn, when he died. Jacob Hain Tursch was buried in Mount Judah Cemetery by the Talmud Torah North Side of Brooklyn Anshe Emeth society.
