Note individuelle : he served as an officer in the Palmah and was killed at Bab el Wad when bringing supplies to Jerusalem. The effort to control the supply route (May 1948) was called "Operation Maccabee" after him.
. Fourteen years old he forced his rich bourgeois parents to send him to the agricultural school "Mikve Yisrael" in then Palestine. After he graduated I think that he joined one of the Kibbutzim. In Israel under the British rule he joined the underground "Hagana" and was one of the commanders in the famous "Palmach" elite regiment (most members of the "Palmach" were Kibbutzim members). He fought the Germans in WWII with the Palestine Brigade. When the war ended he was one of the key figures in what was called "Aliya Beit", the illegal immigration to Palestine of survivors of the holocaust. We kids knew that Oded's (this was the name of his son, my class mate) father was long periods in Europe and thought that he was a rich man on business trips abroad when, in fact, he was a Kibbutz member risking his life every day. During the war of independence (1948) he was one of the commanders of the "Palmach" and fell as the commander of the last convoy that succeeded to clear the road to the besieged Jerusalem (where we kids were living). He married Rachel, an Egyptian girl from Alexandria of Ashkenazi rich bourgeois origins (her Ashkenazi grandfather married into the Qattawi family). She went to Palestine in 1935 and joined a leftist kibbutz. During the years before independence she was an officer in the underground army and in 1948 in the IDF. I remember her as good looking with fair curly hair. She has been since then a Kibbutz member, remarried, and lost two sons. My class mate died 27 years old of a tumor and the other son, killed in one of the wars. The story of this family is a miniature history of the state of Israel.1241
