Note individuelle : was one of around 11 Jews remaining in Egypt, all elderly women, until she passed away earlier this month. Now six remain in Cairo. Mimi never married, keeping a low profile-as a stranger in her own land with no Egyptian citizenship-until the very end. Five years ago, several years after her mother Gabrielle Aghion died, Mimi came close to leaving Egypt, not to Israel where she didn't speak the language, but to live in Boston with my parents. Without a legal way to come to US and stay (we tried everything), she feared that she'd be forced to return to Egypt and no longer have a place to live. I never had a chance to meet her in person but would have liked to.
