Note individuelle : She grew up with three brothers and four sisters. Judaism was very important to Claire’s family. She recalls her father taking her brothers to synagogue regularly, while the rest of the family would attend for all the important occasions in the Jewish calendar.
Claire’s older sister was the first to move to Australia with her British husband, who was in the navy. After experiencing life in Australia while he was stationed here during World War II, the couple decided to move to Perth permanently in search of a better life. With her family so far away in Egypt, Claire’s sister was lonely, so she helped her siblings obtain passports to follow her here. The whole family moved to Australia, except for one brother who migrated to Brazil.
Claire arrived in Australia in 1951 with her husband and six-year-old daughter. Her husband was not religious, but Claire’s Jewish faith and connection with the Sephardi community has remained important to her. Having grown up in Egypt, the songs and the way that Hebrew is spoken in the Sephardi community is all very familiar to Claire. Her daughter, Claude, and grandchildren are now also involved in the synagogue.
