Note individuelle : He studied chemistry at the University of Leiden and in 1884 he obtained his doctorate on the thesis Diacetylazijnaether and aethyldiacetylazijnaether . In 1886 he was a pupil of Louis Pasteur and in the same year he developed the Heineken A-yeast. This yeast still forms the basis for Heineken beer . He also became laboratory director of the Heineken brewery . Gerard Adriaan Heinekenwas the first brewer in the world with a quality control laboratory. In 1922 he published the book Pasteur's initiative to manufacture pure yeast .
Elion married Evelina de Jong in Amsterdam on 10 August 1893. Eduard Elion was a son from this marriage. Elion died at the age of 77 in The Hague.

Note individuelle : Kate was brought up by her Italian maternal grandmother, whom she called Gaggy. Kate absolutely adored her. Gaggy was a brilliant cook, showing Kate the joys of cooking and introducing her to the pleasures of delicious food. With a family that had lived in Egypt for many years, Kate became familiar at an early age with exotic ingredients. It was through this very special bond with her grandmother that Kate's passion for gastronomy was first aroused.
Gaggy brought Kate up, in London, but also at the family house in Scotland, near Loch Ness. Kate adored being in Scotland with her grandmother and her two uncles, Lionel and Dicky. She regarded Lionel as a father figure and Dicky as her brother. Scotland to Kate was just heaven - walking the moors, riding her pony Donald, going fishing and having picnics. In other words enjoying all the best of the outdoor life in glorious scenery. Wherever we went in the world, if Kate heard the bagpipes being played, she would stop in her tracks to find the piper so she could relive those wonderful memories of the Highlands.
Following holidays in Scotland, Kate returned to her boarding school, Cheltenham Ladies' College and went on to become deputy head girl. After four years studying French and Italian at Trinity College Dublin, she became a Production Engineer at the BBC.
It was Kate's next job that launched her career as a food writer. With no experience, she started working on a weekly publication called Supercook. Kate wrote, edited and translated cookery books.
Kate knew that she had found her metier. The British food scene was undergoing a transformation thanks to the arrival of Albert and Michel Roux. Kate read that they were writing a cookbook and emboldened by a superb lunch and an Armagnac at the Waterside Inn in Bray, she introduced herself to Michel Roux. That meeting was the start of a combination of talents which led to Kate working with Michel Roux on 11 books. Kate adored Michel and loved working on the books with him.
