Edrei first began an engineering degree at ETH Zurich , but then switched to mathematics and physics. In 1939 he was promoted to the ETH, his tutor was George Pólya . [1] During World War II he was in the French army and from 1945 to 1949 he was a lecturer at the University of Alexandria . From 1949 to 1952 he was at the universities of Saskatchewan and Colorado . Then he moved to Syracuse University . There he became professor in 1956 and 1971 Distinguished Professor. A main focus of Edrei's work was Nevanlinnasche Wertverteilungstheorie . Many of his works on this subject are written together with Wolfgang Fuchs . Edrei also worked on various other topics of functional theory , such as Padé approximation .
