in 1883 the Egyptian Rahmin Aghion died in Marseilles. He was a very wealthy man. In 1884 his notary in Alexandria told that the city of The Hague received a legacy of f. 7800 (that was 1/3 part of 2% of his assets). The Hague had to spend that amount for half of the hospitals in The Hague. The other half went to children from five different schools for the inmates who would leave primary school and who had distinguished themselves through zeal and behavior. In 1886 Wilhelmina Johanna van Weers received this award. She got a silver pocket watch. A year later the girls would get a sewing machine and the boys a watch. In 1889, none of the children received a prize because the money was spent on purchases for the school.

Né en 1921 dans une famille de banquiers israélites établis en Egypte, décédé le 24 juin 2009, Raymond Aghion a, très vite, pris ses distances pour rejoindre le combat du peuple égyptien. L'antifascisme militant, le surréalisme entendu comme critique de la culture bourgeoise, son sens aigu de la justice sociale l'ont conduit naturellement à rallier le communisme égyptien, en particulier l'organisation connue sous le nom de Raya à partir de 1950.
Aghion était un penseur authentique qui associait - ce qui est toujours exceptionnel - une culture profonde mais non livresque, une ouverture à la diversité culturelle et un sens réaliste des rapports sociaux et du possible en politique. Il était aussi victime de sa modestie exemplaire, qui lui faisait fuir la publicité.
Aghion a participé aux engagement du noyau des intellectuels qui ont forgé les idées qui devaient un peu plus tard s'exprimer à Bandoeng (1955), entre autres dans la revue Moyen Orient, public à Paris en 1950 - 1951. Un exemple qui pourrait inspirer la nouvelle génération engagée à son tour dans le combat pour un second temps de l'éveil du Sud face aux défis de la mondialisation en crise.
