Note individuelle : the reference to 'Valensin Banker' must be to the grandfather of my Nona - Olga Adda. That is the branch of the Adda family that Alexia traced back as direct descendants of Sabbato Adda. Sabbato was officially appointed head of the Jewish community in Egypt by the Emperor Napoleon in 1798 but the family were all of Italian origin. Napoleon himself spoke reasonable French but his mother tongue was Italian as he was Corsican.
The bank, M. Valensin et Cie was headquartered at Palazzo Pucci in Florence and some of the mail we have is addressed to Signore M. Valensin at Palazzo Pucci. M. Valensin et Cie is what I think is the first of the three Adda banks over the years and dates from not very long after Napoleon's time. The bank was active from about 1830 until the 1880s and we still have some of their papers. I think the Pucci family must have rented out one half of their palace which was how it came to be the main office of the bank. Today the Pucci family still own and live in the palace and part of it is open to the public.
